Event Description
Integrating liquid and solid waste-to-energy facilities can produce economies of scale and good financial returns in investment. The capture and combustion of biogas from municipal organic waste is currently generating about 40MWe of electricity in New Zealand and has the added benefit of mitigating 1.5 million tonnes of CO2-equivalent or 3% of New Zealand’s greenhouse gas emissions. Recent work has identified that additional facilities producing 1.9PJ of biogas per annum could be installed. Similar opportunities exist in the food processing sector and throughout Australia. Innovative redesign and upgrading of existing WWTP are allowing a wider range of feedstocks to be processed thus avoiding disposal to landfill and avoiding the need for other capital expenditures. |
