Event Description

The Waste Management and Resource Recovery Association of Australia (WMRR) invites you to join us on the Gold Coast on the 25 – 26 June for the 2025 Energy from Waste Conference (#2025EFW).

ccording to the latest data from the National Waste and Resource Recovery Report 2024 Australia’s resource recovery rate currently stands at about 66% with 26 million tons of material still being disposed of each year.  Unlike the EU, Japan and other parts of the world, Australia has not yet fully grasped the need or ability to capture energy from materials that genuinely cannot be recovered, either from poorly designed products or ones containing hazardous / clinical material for example.

As we move closer to 2030 and the National Waste Policy target of 80% average resource recovery looms, it’s important that we maximise all parts of the waste management hierarchy and work across the entire supply chain to create a system where resources are maximised, and carbon and methane is minimised.  Whilst we wish all products and materials were designed for re-use, repair, recycle, the reality is that they’re not or simply can’t be – these are called residual materials.  Capturing energy can come in a number of formats – thermal, pyrolysis, anaerobic digestion just to name a few – and play a positive role in both managing this residual material and enhancing energy supply.

Over two-days WMRR’s Energy from Waste (EFW) Conference on the Gold Coast, #2025EFW, will explore the role and types of EFW that exist,  how we can use all levels of the waste management hierarchy to strategically manage material, and the opportunities and challenges in developing Energy from Waste facilities in Australia.  Highlights include:

  • An interactive pre-conference workshop
  • Keynote panels and presentations featuring local and international industry experts
  • Eight (8) sessions covering international case studies and insights; planning, policy and regulation; EPC challenges and opportunities; all about AD; how to successfully develop an EfW project; innovation and new technologies; local case studies and insights; and community engagement.
  • Opportunities to network at one of two (2) social functions – pre-conference networking drinks at The Star’s Isoletto Privé and the official conference dinner at the Gold Coast’s one and only Home of the Arts, aka HOTA
  • A range of industry sponsors and exhibitors sharing and showcasing knowledge and innovation in Waste to Energy
